Course Overview

Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering is an undergraduate course offered at the Kwara State University.  It studies the structures of of airplanes, spacecrafts, and missiles structures, the materials that make them efficient, and methods for testing, analysis, and design of new systems. Undergraduates will learn about flight mechanics which involve the  analysis of the motion of aircraft, missiles, rockets, re-entry vehicles, and spacecraft that are subjected to gravitational, propulsive, and aerodynamic forces. The course will also explore fluid mechanics, gas dynamics, heat transfer, as well as aerodynamics. It will explain the development of flight control systems for various space and air crafts. 

Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineers have the technical skills to function in the areas of aerodynamics, structural mechanics, flight mechanics, propulsion, stability and control, and orbital mechanics. The aviation industry depends largely on them to provide their expertise in the application of system engineering skills, and linear system, classical control, digital control and probability theories. The course is designed to introduce you to the mechanical composition of airplanes, for the development and maintenance of their structural systems,

  • Introduction to Aerospace Engineering: The course explores the basic systems of an aerospace vehicle, meteorology, vehicle performance, navigation and safety. 
  • Fluid Mechanics: Study of fundamental aspects of fluid motions and basic principles of gas dynamics with application to the design and analysis of aircraft.
  • Introduction to Astronautics: The history of astronautics, including rocketry and space flight. Fundamentals of astronautics, including space environment, astrodynamics and the analysis and design of spacecraft systems.
  • Aerospace Computer Graphics: The course involves the development of skills in depicting aerospace vehicles and their components and subsystems for the purpose of illustration, design, and analysis using traditional and modern (Computer Aided Design) drafting tools. 
  • Aircraft Aerodynamics and Performance: Study of airfoil and wing aerodynamics, component drag, static and special performance, and maneuvers of aircraft.
  • Aerospace Structures: Analysis and design of aerospace structures from the standpoint of preliminary design. 
  • Systems Design: This involves the preliminary design project of a complete propulsion system, including the airframe, space, and propulsion
  • Fundamentals of Aerodynamics: The course explains basic gas dynamic equations, potential flow for airfoils and bodies, thin airfoil theory, finite wing, subsonic similarity rules, one and two dimensional supersonic flow, boundary layers, heat transfer, and laboratory experiments.
  • Spacecraft Systems: The fundamentals of spacecraft systems and subsystems, spacecraft systems engineering, space environment; basic astrodynamics; and spacecraft subsystems.
