Course Overview

BSc Geography is an undergraduate course of Kano State University of Science and Technology, which studies the physical characteristics of the earth. The course examines the interaction of humans and the natural resource environment, and broadly discusses how the world’s natural resources are able to sustain an increasing population, how physical earth systems respond to human activity and changing climate, how we manage resources, and how we live with environmental change. It explains the impact of earth’s surface, and the impact of its landscape on humans and other inhabitants.

Direct Entry Candidates
  • Advanced Level passes in at least two (2) of the subjects which must include Geography, in addition to credit level passes in five of the subjects required at O’level. 
  • ND/NCE and approved equivalents in relevant fields with at least a lower credit may be considered for direct entry into the programme. 

UTME
  • Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or its equivalents with credit level passes in five (5) subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Geography to form the core subjects, with credit in any two other relevant science, social science or humanities subjects at not more than two sittings.

  • Introduction to Graduate Geography: The course provides an introduction to research techniques, scientific method and the research frontier in geography
  • Geographical Information Systems: Introduction to the use of high-speed digital computers in geographic research. Topics include advanced programming, introductory machine architecture, large file handling and database management systems, computer graphics and digitizing.
  • Locational Analysis: Survey of the historical development of the central ideas of location theory and an analysis of the origin and development of the major sub- fields of economic geography, spatial economics and regional science.
  • Conservation Biogeography: The course answers he question of what is biodiversity, what are its values, and what factors threaten it? It discusses the techniques used to effectively manage and protect species, communities and landscapes.
  • Population Geography: Considers methods for producing population estimates and forecasts, and explores application of population analysis to the planning problems of government and business.
  • Transportation and Spatial Information: Overview of data used in transportation, including travel behavior surveys, vehicle locations, and traffic information. 
  • Geography and Social Theory: Introduction and critical analysis of the current debates in human geography as they reflect or oppose social theory.
  • Urban Geography: Urban Geography is the study of the spatial structure of urban and metropolitan areas. Topics include a study of the changing form of urban areas over time, and the behavior of people that gives rise to particular urban form.
  • Fluvial Geomorphology: The course examines the classic themes in fluvial geomorphology including channel hydraulics, sediment transport, dominant discharge, hydraulic geometry, regime theory, channel patterns, river networks, and river channel change, as well as emerging areas of research.
  • Remote Sensing: Principles, characteristics, and applications of remote sensing; practical training in the methods and techniques of interpretation and analysis of aerospace remotely-sensed data.
  • Transportation and Land Use Modeling: Examines the interactions between urban transportation and spatial patterns of land use in cities. The course covers modeling issues related to the development and use of Integrated Transportation Land Use Models, and their relationships to GIS, as well as policy issues advocated to reduce urban congestion.
  • Geostatistics: This course is designed to introduce basic concepts and applications of geostatistics, one of the most commonly used spatial interpolation methods in science and engineering research and professional applications.
  • Spatial Statistics: Spatial questions that arise in the analysis of spatial data often have to do with the assessing whether clustering is present in the data - natural applications are to the detection of clusters of crime and disease.
