Course Overview

Community Health is an undergraduate course of Modibbo Adama University of Technology.. The course introduces the interdisciplinary and collaborative health care practices in local, regional, national, and global environments. It explores world health issues and policies by examining selected threats to health within a specified population. Undergraduates will validate the global interconnectedness of humanity, and investigate the effect of economic globalization on health issues. It elaborates on issues such as global warming, cross border pollution, the spread of infectious diseases and other health threats of global scale. The course also introduces students to the theories of health promotion, health behavioural change, community health research, biostatistics, and health education, and their application to real life cases. 

Graduates of Community Health plan, implement, and evaluate health programs to improve the health of vulnerable and diverse groups through organized community efforts. They work with international health organisations, government, health agencies, hospitals, and non-profits to provide community-based health care. The course will introduce you to the strategies to deploy for such, and equip you with requisite skills for efficient patient-care. 

By completing the course, you would have acquired the skills to effectively plan, develop, implement and evaluate community health education and delivery programs, in a variety of community health settings.

Admission Criteria

  • Credit passes in GCE/SSCE/NECO/NABTEB in relevant subjects which include English language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology or Health Sciences, Economics/Physics/Geography
  • Registered and licensed as a community health extension worker (with Diploma in Community Health, Tropical Health).
  • Registered and licensed nurse/midwife/environmental health officer.

Step 1: Visit the University’s Centre for Distance Learning portal to generate a Reference Number/PIN. 
Step 2: Proceed to any branch of UBA Plc in Yola, Mubi, Maiduguri, Jalingo, Gombe, Bauchi, Abuja or Lagos to pay the application fee if N5, 600.00. 
Step 3: Return to the admission portal to fill and submit the application form, and print the acknowledgement slip.
Step 4: Post the printed application form with copies of credentials to the Secretary, Centre for Distance Learning, Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Aliyu Mai Borno Estate, Yola bye-pass P.M.B. 2076, Yola Adamawa State. Indicate your application number and choice of programme in the top-left hand corner of the envelope.

  • Epidemiology: This is the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events (including disease), and the application of this study to the control of diseases and other health problems.
  • Introduction to Health Information Systems (HIS): The course will introduce students to systems that capture, stores, manage or transmit information related to the health of individuals or the activities of organisations that work within the health sector.
  • Biology for Public Health: The course provides a foundation in the biological mechanisms and principles underlying major public health problems
  • Determinants of Health:  The range of behavioural, biological, socio-economic and environmental factors that influence the health status of individuals or populations.
  • The Environment and Human Health: The course examines the role of the environment on health status.
  • Sociology of Health, Public Health and Health Promotion: The course explores the fundamentals of public health, the social rationale behind community health efforts, as well as the approach for community health delivery.
  • Introduction to Health Statistics: This course provides you with the basic skills to carry out your own research project including designing a questionnaire, collecting data, processing and undertaking basic statistical analysis with designated software.
  • Drug Use and Abuse: It examines how drug abuse constitute threats to community well being.
  • Controlling Stress and Tension: This is an aspect of community-based health education that educates the public on stress managing.
  • Human Sexuality: The course discusses strategies to ensure a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality in people. 
  • Peer Education: This explains  an approach to health promotion, in which community members are supported to promote health-enhancing change among their peers
  • Minority Health: An aspect of community health that seeks to reach the underserved community. 
  • Women's Health: This is focused on public health primarily for women. Students learn about gynaecology, obstetrics, perinatology, and other concepts focusing on women in communities.
