The Delta State University, Abraka - popularly known as DELSU, is a State government university with a main campus located at Abraka, Delta and a campus at Anwai, Asaba. With the 1995 Amended Edict, we now have a campus at Oleh. The University runs a multi-campus system with three campuses within a distance of about 200 km apart. Currently, with a student population of about 36,000 (in the 2007/08 session), the University offers a range of programmes from the full-time certificate, diploma and degree programmes to part-time evening and weekend degree programmes. The University offers post-graduate studies up to a doctoral level. A staff/student counselling centre, an e-learning centre, student accommodation and sporting facilities amidst others are available support services.. It is one of twenty-five federal universities which are overseen and accredited by the National Universities Commission.

ESSPIN is one of a set of DFID-funded State Level Programmes (SLPs), working in governance, accountability and the delivery of health and education services. DFID-ESSPIN supports federal and state authorities as they work both to reform the governance of education and to improve the quality of education that children receive.
ESSPIN is a partnership between the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) and the Nigerian Government. The eight and a half-year programme (2008 – 2017) supports federal and state governments – Enugu, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kwara and Lagos – to develop effective planning, financing and delivery systems that will improve the quality of schools, teaching and learning.
By 2017, ESSPIN will have had a significant impact on 11,308 public and non-government schools and approximately 4.7m learners.
The Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun(FUPRE), Delta State, Nigeria was established in March 2007 under a Federal Government of Nigeria initiative to build a specialized University to produce unique high level manpower and relevant expertise for the Oil & Gas sector in Nigeria and worldwide.
At first, it occupied the PTI Conference centre, Effurun Delta state, which is few kilometres away from the permanent site. The new site covered large hectares of land generously leased by the chiefs and people of Uviwe kingdom.
FUPRE is the first of its kind in Africa and it is destined to be the premier international institution-of-choice with the state-of-the-art facilities to provide the petroleum and allied sectors, world class education, training, research, consultancy and extension services.
FUPRE organise its academic activities along college lines. Under this arrangement, related Departments are grouped to form a College without an intervening tier of faculties.
The foundational College of the University was College of science with 113 foundation students. The foundation students began their courses at FUPRE, on May, 2007.
The College not only enrols its own students but serves as support for other colleges to be established. The General Studies and Entrepreneurship Unit was also established in the College to coordinate all programmes of the University aiming at producing rounded graduates with entrepreneurial skills.
The first SOD turning at the permanent site of the University, took place on 10 March, 2010.
