The idea of establishing an Islamic University in Nigeria was conceived immediately after the commissioning ceremony of the Islamic University in Niger Republic established by the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC). The Niamey Islamic University commenced studies in 1987 and that gave more impetus to the Nigerian Muslims to crave for a similar University in Nigeria.
Al-Qalam University, Katsina (formally Katsina University, Katsina) came into been in January 2005 consequent upon a license given by the National Universities Commission. A time-table drawn by the Academic advisory committee ensured the take-off of academic activities in October, 2005. The main distinguishing feature between the Al-Qalam University, Katsina and other conventional Universities was the conduct of moral and academic regulations. That was expected to raise an educated, morally sound and Allah fearing society which is the pride of any community or nation. The University is design to specialize in Humanities and Sciences.

Al-Qalam University is designed to impart meaningful and relevant Knowledge with high moral standing and fear of Allah (SWT) through provision of up-to-date teaching and research facilities in informatics, sciences and humanities thereby serving as a model to similar institutions in Nigeria.

Our mission is pursuit of academic excellence in an Islamic, morally sound, efficient, and conducive learning environment. The university will provide quality education and promote research and community service through high standards in students’ admission and staff recruitment.

The University Visioner of the Archdiocese of Lagos is Cardinal Anthony Okogie, who until August 2012, was the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos. He has since been succeeded by Most Rev. Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins. The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has since promoted educational development in its territory. Many primary and secondary schools were established by the Archdiocese of Lagos. The Archdiocese is the proprietor of St. Augustine's College of Education, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos, the first privately-owned college of education in Nigeria. In order to carry further the establishment of educational institutions, a decision was taken to establish the Augustine University. The decision was informed by the belief of the Proprietor that higher education plays a crucial role in the modern world since it is a key source of ideas and inventions. It is also in recognition of this fact and the need to expand access to higher education, that the Federal Government of Nigeria granted permission to corporate bodies and organizations to establish private universities provided they meet appropriate conditions.

When he nursed the idea of establishing a university, the Visioner set up a planning and implementation committee under the chairmanship of a retired professor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Joseph O. Obemeata. Members of the Committee were to 'midwife' a world class institution of higher learning that will attract and prepare intelligent and talented young men and women from diverse background within the country, Nigeria and beyond, for all-round training and development.

The mission of the University is to "foster student learning through high quality, career-oriented education, integrating personal development, technology, business and management". Augustine University will deliver practitioner-oriented undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to meet the needs of diverse student population.

The University vision is "to be the leading global provider of career-oriented educational services".
